ER Madness

Well the suburban idiots are out in force. Our ER was full of patients needing prescription refills, narcotic party drugs, sleeping off their alcohol binges, and yes wanting their mosquito bites looked at for west nile virus. All this while whining about the wait while we care for the truly sick and injured. Obviously they haven't learned if you piss off the health care worker you wait even longer since any motivation to help move them along dissapates proportionately to the amount of whining they do! The day before I retire I will say to every patient what I have been wanting to for the last 35 years. I really wanted to tell the mosquito woman that if it was west nile the bites would have left the initals W and N. If it wasn't for the people this would be a dream job.

would you say the level of paranoia has gone up since you've worked in suburbia? i don't know if somebody downtown could convince themselves that they needed urgent care when there are gunshot wounds and heart attacks all around. do you think it's just a worry-factor?

I think it has more to do with the 24 hour news channel scare tactics along with my generation seeming to be unable to cope with feeling anything bad and people feeling so stressed and overwhelmed the thought of being home sick is something they can't handle
